The highest minarets in Iran belong to one of its oldest grand mosques. Jameh Mosque of Yazd has all the essential factors of a religious building. It is of epic size with an intertwined web of colorful tiles and plaster-work and it is a source of comfort and inspiration for the believers. The main building dates back to the 12th century, renovated in the 14th century. But the towering minarets are the work of the Safavid artists in the 16th century.

Alexander’s Prison

According to some legends, the site of Ziaee School had been a prison during the reign of Alexander the Great over Iran; hence the name Alexander’s Prison. But as far as we know, this beautiful monument is 800 years old and was a school. The architecture is in the Azeri style, very similar to other historic structures in Yazd. The dome of the school is 18 meters high and is embellished by fabulous forms of vaults known as Muqarnas.

Zoroastrian Fire Temple

Although the majority of Iranians are Muslims, there are many other religions practiced in the country. Zoroastrianism had been the official religion of Iranian before the rise of Islam. There are still many Iranians who practice Zoroastrianism. Yazd boasts the largest population of Zoroastrians in Iran. Fire Temple in Yazd is the one of nine temples in the world preserving Atesh Behram (the holiest class of fires in the faith). The temple was constructed in 1930s but he sacred fire kept in it dates back to 470 AD and is the only Atesh Behram outside India.
